A nice two-fer from Scotland, where an environmental activist literally super-glued herself to the front desk of the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh to protest the bank’s lending to fossil fuel companies. Because if fastening yourself to a secretary’s work space and getting arrested won’t convince RBS to change its lending priorities, nothing will.
The best part of this article, however, is the trailblazing approach of the so-called Climate Camp, of which this woman was apparently a part. Climate Camp is reportedly a gathering of about 1000 activists in and around Edinburgh that was to culminate in a “day of action” today. All you need to know about these clowns is in this money quote: “And while they insist they want to make their point peacefully, the group have also admitted that they may take illegal actions.”
Ah yes – illegal actions. The key to bringing about the sustainable energy, green jobs and clean economies that we need. For every one of these tools that gets arrested super-gluing themselves to desks or throwing fire extinguishers through the windows of their neighborhood RBS branch, the task of convincing Joe Public that drastic change is necessary become a little bit more difficult.
Sometimes I look at the state of the environmental movement and wonder if we’re all being punk’d. Are we sure that Climate Camp and isn’t part of some PR stunt devised by Rupert Murdoch to make enviros look incompetent, juvenile and idiotic? Because if it’s not, we’re doing a hell of a job making ourselves look incompetent, juvenile and idiotic on our own.
