Solar Power From the Sahara

Fascinating article in the WSJ about a German physicist’s idea for supplying Europe with solar energy via the Sahara Desert.  Kind of reminds me of George Friedman’s discussion of solar energy in “The Next 100 Years,” although he envisions space-based solar panels beaming energy to receivers on earth.  Either way, this stuff boggles the mind.

It sounds like there are some heavyweights behind the Germany idea (Siemens, Munich Re, etc.) and that, despite some acknowledged challenges, they’re going to give this idea their best shot. Successful or unsuccessful, the real take away for me is the final thought from the physicist himself:

“Knies says he's not too worried how, or whether, [the project] will ever take off. More important is that the idea helps push governments to take bigger leaps into renewable energy, he says.”

Bingo. Think big and big things will follow. Someday soon there may be no choice.
