Steve Munson and The Seven Apostles

Apologies for the lack of original content recently; I’ve been traveling for work and meeting with some friends of mine out here in the Wild West.  Time is scarce these days but I should be back to a normal posting schedule in the days ahead.

One interesting tidbit that I learned during a stop in Oregon Duck country (other than the fact that Chip Kelly’s men got robbed in the latest BCS standings – Auburn, really?!?): our old friend, Steve Munson, was named as the debtor in an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy petition filed on October 14th.  Taken at face value, such a development should not come as a total surprise, given Munson’s past history of six-figure tax liens and the like.  However, when you dig a little bit deeper, it’s clear that this filing isn’t exactly what it seems to be at first glance.

There are seven petitioning creditors listed in the filing (bankruptcy petition #10-39795-tmb7, US Bankruptcy Court, District of Oregon): Cynthia Bene, Calvin Oldham, Ginger Sanders, Robert Buechler, Edward Slavkovsky, Arthur Smith and Colgan Smith. The petitioners claim that Munson owes them over $133,000 in wages and payments.

Now it’s no secret that everybody likes to get paid for doing their jobs and, as such, if people don’t get those funds as promised, it can lead to some tensions with the boss.  So if the Munson gang’s paychecks have been delinquent for months, I can see how they might feel they have no other option if they want to pay their rent, pay off their credit cards, keep the water on, etc.

However, it wasn’t too long ago that some of these petitioners were talking about Steve Munson like he was a god among men:

Bene: “Steve is a wonderful teacher. He is demanding, but fair. I would follow Steve to the ends of the earth working alongside him if I could as he is the most intelligent and dynamic person whom I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and for.”

Sanders: ”Steve is a fair, tough, blunt and generous man. He is one of the smartest people I have ever met and consequently has made me a smarter person. I’ve learned and grown more in the last few years than I did in the ten before.”

Buechler (posting as ‘Bob B.’): “I have only worked with Steve Munson for a short time, but even within these last few months, one thing is obvious: Mr. Munson is the single most honorable man I have ever worked for. He is a visionary commited [sic] to saving this planet. I remain humbled that he selected me, and I am honored to work for him. I chose to move my family across this great country because I believe in Steve Munson and I believe he is probably the only one left in America brave enough to effect REAL CHANGE.”

Slavkovsky: “Munson is an intelligent, highly-organized entrepreneur, who gets a lot done in a short period of time. He does his research, deals with facts and takes decisive action, while empowering his staff to achieve beyond their imaginations. He has a tremendous historical perspective. His handshake still means what a handshake meant in the past. I know. I work for him. His genius rubs off on his employees, a highly educated mix of youth and sages. In my 35 years of Senior Management in 50 to 100 million dollar companies, I have never seen a more unique, challenging, on-point visionary who whants [sic] to do what is right.”

Both Bene and Sanders note their own activities in the Vulcan Shareholders Rights Protection Committee, a Munson organization created to fight Denham Capital, after Denham gave Munson the boot upon realizing that he was a entrepreneurial charlatan.  Sanders and Oldham have also appeared in videos posted by the group on Vimeo.com (which have since been made private).  So I don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say that at least a few of these petitioners are on the record as having consumed the Munson brand kool-aid.  And while money can make people do funny things, I’m not sure that a bankruptcy petition is the path I’d take if my personal Jesus owed me money for services rendered.

So what’s really going on here?  Interestingly, People Who Know Things in Bend tell me that Munson’s legal battle with Denham hasn’t been going in his favor lately – the kind of thing that happens when you don’t show up in court, as he is apparently fond of doing.  I’m told Munson’s already on the hook for a few million bucks to Denham after that stunt and that things were about to get worse (i.e. they were about to peek inside Munson’s books) when the bankruptcy petition was filed and all other Munson-related actions were stayed.

Now it makes sense.  When you’ve got a group of people that worship you, who would do anything for you, who would walk 1,000 miles just to be the toadies who fell down at your door, why not have them file a bankruptcy proceeding against you if it serves the greater good, which in this case would be avoiding additional exposure in your battle with Denham?  It’s not what I’d do on behalf of someone who owed me a few months’ wages, but maybe I’d change my tune if the right drunk-driving, woman-punching, animal-neglecting, earth-saving cowboy came along.

  1. I notice that Wells Fargo and John Deere have signed on as creditors. Maybe the filing is for real.

  2. And now Vulcan files for dismissal. Vulcan and Denham have judgments against Munson (and others?)for $1.6 million, and the bankruptcy filing stayed the examination the court had ordered. If the dismissal is granted, the examination goes forward.

  3. Really? You are way off base if you can liken Steve Munson to Jesus. He has never been my "personal Jesus". Only Jesus is my personal Jesus! Yes, of everything you've said, that is the one thing I take most offense with.

    Sincerely,

Proud to be Me (and not hide behind a psuedonym): Cynthia Bene'

  4. Anonymous/Cynthia, the reference to a "personal Jesus" was nothing more than a shout-out to Depeche Mode - I wasn't intending to insult your religious beliefs. If you notice, I sprinkled a couple of musical references into this post, and that was one of them.

However, just as you feel insulted when others invoke the name of a false prophet, I take offense when people like Steve Munson style themselves as leaders of the green/environmental movement in this country. With friends like Steve, who needs enemies?

People like Steve, with all the personal and professional problems that are out there for the world to see, make true greens look bad and make it that harder to advance a successful agenda in an already hostile environment. If there's a false prophet at work here, it's surely him

  5. And yet more new stuff. First, the original involuntary petition is amended by Ginger Sanders to add creditors (including Frank Cariglia!) and increase claims from $133,000 to $315,000.

Second, Munson files a motion to dismiss, offering four defenses. Is this bona fide? Or a delaying tactic?

After the proof of service of the initial petition showed up, *just* in time to avoid dismissal for lack of prosecution, the court ordered a hearing in December. My bet is all the motioning and posturing will be argued then.

Win, lose, or draw, Munson's debtor's exam has been pushed back at least three months. The bankruptcy petition, which stayed the exam, was filed 10/14/10, nine days before the exam's ordered date.

    Stay tuned.

  6. Cynthia, I can't say I blame this dude for being anonymous, given that if Steve knew who it was ha'd probably stick a gun in their face! Unless the writer's a women, then he'd probably punch her in the face LeGarrette Blount style lol

  7. 11/22/10: Wells Fargo seeks permission to foreclose on Munson's ranch in Bend. The note's unpaid for two months, and the total due is about $1.2 million. The bank says the property's value is now about $800,000.

11/24/10: Vulcan Power (including Denham and others) ask the court to order the debtor's exam that the bankruptcy filing postponed. Now they want it done under the auspices of the bankruptcy court.

  8. I agree. Seems like there are a lot of past issues for such a "nice guy". It looks like Mr. Munson has had a lot of things slide right on by. Someone needs to take the bull by the horns. I sure hope that everything works out well for all of these people.

  9. Well, Doug, as one of your family members, it is clear why you continue to defend this sick brother of yours. He bought you a townhome in Beaverton and he has bought you off all your life. Remember how, when you still had some brains in your head, that you and Steve would come to blows and you wouldn't see him for years on end? Then when you needed money, you always went back, he gave you his crappy jobs, and bought you off time and time again. Steve is Bipolar, YOU are Bipolar, you both lie about your lives and what you have done, like you're a big Vietnam hero when you ran a dump truck? Steve gets his hands on $15 million and it's GONE in less than a year, buying ships, buying off you, buying up leases he has NO plan to develop, breaking hearts and bank accounts of others with NO concept that anyone would mind if he helped himself to their money. Ever notice how BOTH of you have NO concept of self-blame, no, you only blame everyone else for how you behave. You both could have had SUCH different lives had you had ANY recognition that "normal" people do not behave like you and Steve. GET ON BIPOLAR MEDICATIONS NOW AND GET PSYCHIATRIC HELP LIKE YOUR MOTHER AND YOU CAN STILL SALVAGE SOMETHING OF YOUR PATHETIC, DESTRUCTIVE LIFE. The truth is, SOME of us, a VERY few, still have hope you and Steve could turn this around and look in a mirror.

    1. I'm certainly not sure if this is you... Doug Munson, however; I have been trying to re-establish a good friendship from the 1960's with Steve... I have no interest in all of the crap out there on anybody... but, simply would like to enjoy great memories from High School days and U of O... as experienced as a Beaver! Sorry about your health, although it seems that you are still "with-it"... anyway, Steve will know who I am... and can TRUST that I only wish to... "pour us a drink and share some lies"... life was fun then and remains so... wishing all of you a wonderful Holyday Season... It's a Wonderful Life!

PS: Thank You... for your service.

  11. Well, Anonymous from November 26, 2013, "sharing some lies" is exactly what you will get by spending one moment of your life with either of the Munson boys. Good luck. You must have something better to do with your life than waste it on Drama Kings who destroy everyone they meet. These two are seriously ill people. You know they're lying because,as they say, their lips are moving.

  13. Yes, he lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife Marianne Thomas. He hides behind her skirts, but travels a lot still trying to get geothermal going in Texas. His address if you'd like to drive by is: 65725 Gerking Market Rd, Bend, OR 97701. He is still married to her and he still lives there, it is his only owned property. You just have to watch for him, like all of his creditors and process servers do.

  18. CORRECTION TO THE TRIAL DATE ABOVE: STEVE MUNSON'S TRIAL IS SET FOR FEBRUARY 28, 2017, not Feb 2nd. But the witness lists are all due by February 7th, so you need to contact the prosecutor listed in the above post long before that time if you have evidence of criminal activity.
